08.23.10 Serfas USB Lights
Bright, water-resistant lights are a necessity for riding a bike at night or in bad weather. It's really nice being seen by other traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. The only negative part are the batteries. My lights always seem to get dim whenever I don't have a spare set of batteries. Serfas has just released a new series of lights with a rechargeable power source. Instead of using a proprietary AC-adaptor/charger, however; they utilize a super-convenient USB plug that allows you to recharge using your computer. The USB-1 models have a plug built-in to the light - no cord necessary! They're also very quick to install and remove, allowing them to be switched between bikes easily and prevent theft. The best part, though, they're all under $30.

08.21.10 Cheap bike storage solutions! A passion for bikes is a great thing, but it can lead to a storage nightmare! Last week two of our employees, Morgan and Pete, set out to help out some friends who had recently moved into a house that is over-flowing with bicycles. Between the five residents of the new home there are eleven bicycles and one unicycle, so as you can imagine bike space is tight and this project had to be carried out on a budget. They used a twelve-foot-long 2" x 6" purchased from Home Depot and ten Sunlite Storage Hooks which are available at Cambridge Bicycle for $9.95 a pair. All together a cheap and durable storage area was created for under $50 and about two hours worth of work. If you're interested in learning more about in-home bike storage solutions, come in and we would be happy to help you with the many available options!

07.27.10 Employee Bike Profile: Dan's Miayata
Just like pictures, bicycles are worth a thousand words. Dan's Miyata, however; is worthy of it's own Homeric epic. He dumpstered this frame, which was once a 1980's chromoly road bike with Shimano 600 parts, and quickly stripped it. It's been built and re-built several times; changed ownership at least three times; and was once literally dragged behind a car to New Jersey by a previous owner. This bike has been a fixed gear, single-ring road bike, and currently is a dedicated single speed. Aside from it's pallet of stickers, rust, and chipped paint, there are other elements to this rig that makes it the perfect commuter for Dan.
Some of the highlights are, apart from stickers and spokey dokes; a Brooks leather saddle, Odyssey BMX pedals (for grip and durability), a wheelset he built himself (Mavic Open Pros to Formula hubs) and flat-resistant tires, and the essential beat-up front basket. It's certainly one of the more unique bikes you'll see locked outside our shop and one of the most-loved.
