New Origin 8 build and Ortlieb bags!
Posted by Cambridgebicycle.com Blog Admin   •   Tuesday, 2009-June-30

Our mechanic Tom recently finished this custom build for the shop. It's the new Origin 8 Del Pesado frame built as a coaster brake single-speed, equipped with riser bars, DP-18 rims, and Odyssey pedals. It's a great bike for getting around and getting your sick skids on. Also: it's yours for $650! Get it for yourself before someone else does. (We also have a couple of these framesets available for purchase, or for a custom build. They're only $199 if you buy a crankset and wheelset, too!)

Just yesterday we got a shipment of Ortlieb bags straight in from Germany. Not only do we have their waterproof messenger bags in black, red, orange, silver, and yellow, but also smaller backpacks, pannier bags, and versatile office bags that can double as pannier bags. All of them are extremely durable and 100% waterproof. If you need an inexpensive bag that's perfect for your commute, these are for you. (Just look how good our employee Alex looks in one!)
Omnium Series Pursuit Night Update
Posted by Cambridgebicycle.com Blog Admin   •   Thursday, 2009-June-25

Cambridge Bicycle rider Nick Mashburn set the winning time in the Category A 3000 meter Individual Pursuit .

The Cambridge Bicycle Summer Omnium Series at the New England Velodrome has seen some good racing so far this summer. Last Tuesday and Wednesday saw the second in a series of three events, and Pursuit Races were the feature omnium event. Racers competed for Omnium points in both the 3000 meter Individual Pursuit and the Australian Pursuit.

Gary Bavolar was only .14 seconds off the winning time.

With Omnium points up for grabs, both nights saw some fierce competition. Tuesday night had both Juniors and Womens fields, and many new riders showed up as well. If you've ever considered giving track racing a try, the track has a very accommodating atmosphere for new riders. Check the website for information of rideshares up to the track.

Here are the photo galleries from the races on Tuesday night and Wednesday night.

The Category B field warms up with a Scratch Race.

The final week of the Cambridge Bicycle Summer Omnium Series is coming up on July 21st and 22nd. Featured races for the final week will be the ever popular Miss and Out and Match Sprints. Mark your calenders now so you don't miss out on you last chance to score Omnium points to win some great prizes!

Light Lane Prototype released
Posted by Cambridgebicycle.com Blog Admin   •   Monday, 2009-June-22

Want your bike to shoot lasers? Of course you do! While some may fantasize of this idea for more subversive means, the designers at Boston's own LightLane have more practical uses for bike-mounted laser projectiles.

Months ago their design for a self-contained, laser-projected bike lane for night riding made the rounds of the internet. Recently, they created a working prototype of their concept and a video documenting it in action. Compressed digital video and real-life experience are two different things, so I can't really say whether this prototype will live up to its potential. As a concept, though, it's pretty intriguing.

If the LightLane ever goes into production rest assured we'll be trying our best to get a few! [Video found via BikeHacks.]
Mt Washington Hillclimb
Posted by Cambridgebicycle.com Blog Admin   •   Saturday, 2009-June-20

This very morning a pack of three hundred cyclists are making their way up the Mt. Washington auto road in the yearly Mt. Washington Auto Road Hillclimb. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the annual hillclimb, it's roughly 7.9 miles of a 22% uphill grade. (Here's a breakdown of the ride, courtesy of North East Cycling.) Last week someone came into the shop and talked about his experience with the climb on his Bianchi Pista. He said he made it in one hour and 20 minutes, at a better time than his multi-gear rode bike. We sell Pistas at the shop, of course, and we also carry 22-tooth cogs and teeny-tiny chain rings. Inspired yet? [image from North Eastern Cycling.]
Load bearing

The revolution will be carried on your bicycle and there are more ways of doing it than ever before.

This one with the top is an animal basket, but it could be useful for a lot of stuff.

This last photo is from a customer's bike. She bought our wildly popular KHS Green and mounted a quick-release front basket to the rear rack. I'm not recommending this gerry-rig, but the thought of adaptations is always so evolutionary....

Boston NACCC 09
Posted by Cambridgebicycle.com Blog Admin   •   Tuesday, 2009-June-16

NACCC BOSTON 2009 - JULY 31 - AUGUST 2 2009
"The NACCC is one of the biggest international events every year for cycle couriers, but not just for racers. The NACCC is also one of the largest annual gatherings of our community. Cycle Messenger Championships are world class sporting events, but they are also a festival celebrating messenger culture.

The related events, shows, parties and vendor markets showcase the artistic, photographic, musical and literary talents of the world's hardest working professional athletes.

All the info on the main race will be available long before you come visit our amazing city, so don't worry about that. Until then, just know it's going to make you hurt. A lot.

NACCC 2009 Boston will put a feature on a lot of the side events that so often get overshadowed and go unnoticed by too many. The sprints, fixed gear events, art show, miscallenous title competitions and parties will be second to none!"
